Statement on humanitarian crisis in Gaza

The British Orthodontic Society (“BOS”) is a charity and non-political organisation with members of many backgrounds, faiths and those of no faith. We have been contacted by large numbers of members seeking a comment on the crisis in Gaza.

The British Orthodontic Society is deeply saddened by the current level of global conflict and the dire humanitarian and healthcare crises that have resulted. We are horrified at the escalating situation in Gaza and urge immediate removal of restrictions to humanitarian aid in the region.

The ongoing restrictions have left food and medical supplies depleted and healthcare workers struggling to provide essential treatment. Aid organisations must be allowed to operate independently and impartially to deliver life-saving assistance, and basic food provisions.

The denial of humanitarian aid risks violating international humanitarian law and exacerbating the suffering of civilians. Immediate action is needed to ensure that medical and food aid reaches those in desperate need.

BOS advocates for appropriate oral health care for patients. This is impossible to provide against a backdrop of abject hunger,  population displacement, destruction of homes, shelter and healthcare facilities and the reported targeting of healthcare workers.

Alongside our colleagues in other UK healthcare charities,  we share the collective purpose improving clinical practice and patient care. On behalf of members, we express our abhorrence of violence in all forms, our compassion for all affected peoples and our support for healthcare workers who are risking their lives caring for the sick and injured.

Members who would like to offer support for humanitarian action may wish to contact the following organisations:

Yours sincerely

Robbie Lawson

BOS President
