Limited Treatment Orthodontics

Limited Treatment Orthodontics (LTO) or Short-Term Orthodontics (STO) as it is sometimes known is a form of treatment that typically involves only the anterior six teeth in one or both arches. This kind of treatment can be suitable for addressing the cosmetic concerns of an adult as long as this option is presented in addition to all other viable restorative and comprehensive orthodontic options and all diagnostic criteria have been assessed.

Whilst many people may think that the way their teeth bite together is not important, in the longer term this can lead to headaches and other problems such as tooth wear or damage to dental restorations. Your existing bite may get worse with an STO treatment which only concentrates on the anterior teeth. It’s important to be aware that not everyone is suitable for short-term orthodontic treatment, particularly those with complex problems.

With such a wide range of orthodontic treatments, it can sometimes be confusing. That is why we recommend that if you are thinking about short-term or limited treatment orthodontics, we recommend seeing an orthodontist or dentist who also offers conventional treatment for a consultation. They’ll be able to explain all of your options and allow you to make a fully informed decision.
