Philip is Emeritus Professor at the University of Sheffield, where he worked for 21 years, as Senior Lecturer, Reader, then Professor of Orthodontics/Honorary Consultant until 2021. He was involved in teaching, supervising, and assessing undergraduate dental students, orthodontic specialty trainees and overseas postgraduate students.

He continues to undertake research relevant to the clinical practice of orthodontics, including investigating the effectiveness of contemporary orthodontic techniques and practice, as well as the development, testing and use of patient-reported outcomes (PROs) to measure the impact of malocclusion and orthodontic treatment on young peoples’ everyday lives.

His previous roles in the British Orthodontic Society include Treasurer of the University Teachers Group, Editor of BOS News and the Journal of Orthodontics, Director of Research, when he also acted as a BOS Trustee.
