Sharon Orton-Gibbs

We are very sad to announce the sudden passing of Dr Sharon Orton-Gibbs, who was killed in a traffic accident while cycling in France.

Sharon was defined professionally by her clinical excellence combined with deep kindness, a rare and treasured combination.

Sharon qualified from Bristol and started her professional career in North London before commencing her orthodontic training at the Eastman Dental hospital in 1986. From the outset, exceptional qualities were evident.

A consultant orthodontist role followed at Helier University Hospital in Surrey where, as Lead Clinician, she built a respected department, remaining in post for 11 years. She  combined that with providing care for countless families around south London for over 21 years by taking over her father’s orthodontic practice at Walpole Road.

She married Chris and had two children, Sam and Abi. Grandchildren have followed more recently and her devotion to her family was central to her life. The same care and attention that she showed to family and friends extended into professional life, with unwavering standards, respectful collaboration, and authentic compassion shown to every patient.

She was a keen educator and frequently lectured nationally and internationally. She was an engaging speaker and brought enthusiasm and a relatable approach to every session. Even in retirement, this passion continued through volunteer work with the NSPCC, conducting safety talks in schools. Sharon had an extraordinary ability to make others feel welcome and valued. Her warmth and generosity of spirit fostered respect in all aspects of her life and professional practice.

Sharon had a steely will that belied her gentle manner. She was clear in her beliefs, thoughtful in her convictions, and unafraid to stand by her principles. Rather than impose views, she was curious, invited conversation and always listened with compassion. She consistently saw the good in people, a rare gift. Humour and kindness infused both work and personal life. Sharon was a vibrant, multi-dimensional individual whose personality shone brightly throughout every interaction.

Beyond her professional life she was an accomplished artist and musician and had a love of France which she shared with her family whether it be skiing, walking, cycling, paddleboarding, or spending quiet time in nature with loved ones.

The loss of Sharon leaves a space that will not easily be filled. She will be missed deeply and remembered always with love, gratitude, and admiration.
