The mono bloc was the first functional appliance. It was first used by Pierre Robin in 1902 to treat patients with glossoptosis syndrome.

Robin’s appliance consisted of a plate with an expansion screw. It was kept in place by covering the lingual surfaces of the teeth. The appliance stimulated facial muscular activity by changing the position of the jaws.
